Performance and Eligibility Requirements ![]() Instrumental and keyboard performers must be 11 to 22 years of age as of the date of the competition, and must reside or study within a 70 mile radius of the church. Vocal performers must be 15 to 22, as the voice matures more slowly. Accepted performers need to prepare three to four works totaling 15 to 25 minutes duration, from which the judges will select portions to hear. Each performer will choose the first selection, then the judges will interrupt and ask you to start another piece from your submitted list. Actual time on stage will be about 10 minutes. Performance must be solo, or accompanied by piano, organ, or orchestral instrument (no piano duets). The competition will run from 1 to 6 p.m. The four prize winners must be available to perform at the Winners Recital on February 26, 2012 at 3 PM. They will receive their awards at that time. The Grand Prize winner will receive $500; the winners of the instrumental, keyboard, and voice categories will each receive $250. The grand prize winner is not eligible to compete in future competitions. Performers must provide the judges one published or legally printed edition of the music they are performing (no photo copies). This music is to be submitted right before competing and will be returned right after you compete. More details will be sent out to those accepted. Accompanists add a lot to the competition for the singers and instrumentalists, but you must make your own arrangements. Entries are limited to approximately 21 total participants (about seven in each division) and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The application deadline is February 12, 2012. A non-refundable registration fee of $25 is required. To enter the competition, please complete the application and mail it and a $25 check to First Presbyterian Church, 514 South Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23669. Checks should be payable to "Memorial Concert Series." Teachers: feel free to distribute this webpage for the benefit of your students or others, and if you have students that have promise but are not ready, encourage them to come and observe the competition.
