THE VIRGINIA HANDBELL CONSORT

Sunday, September 20, 2009 - 3 PM

The Virginia Handbell Consort was formed in 1996 as the first tidewater area handbell
ensemble, with the goal of promoting ringing by intensive practice and concerts. They
perform on Schulmerich bells, Melody Chimes, Petit-Fritsen bells, and other percussion
instruments. Their repertoire includes spectacular selections of classical, popular, and
sacred music that will bring a new appreciation of this increasingly popular genre. They
were a big hit at their first concert here two years ago, and they set our hallways ringing
each Saturday as they rehearse.

THE MUSIC of TIN PAN ALLEY

Sunday, October 18, 2009 - 3 PM

Join us for an entertaining and enlightening look at the contributions of Jewish lyricists and
composers to the American popular music of the late 19th and 20th century. Featuring the
unforgettable songs of Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Rodgers and
Hammerstein, Charles Harris, Albert von Tilzer, Nora Bayes, Jack Norworth, Gus Kahn, Walter Donaldson, and others, this happy music celebrates the rich heritage of these talented Jewish men and women. Selections include "After the Ball', "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", "Shine On, Harvest Moon", " Can't Help Lovin Dat Man", and "God Bless America". Hosted and narrated by actor and WHRO announcer Tim Morton, this concert is performed by a quartet from the Virginia Chorale; soprano Amy Cofield Williamson, mezzo-soprano Lisa Relaford Coston, tenor Scott Williamson, bass Steve Kelley, and pianist Charles Woodward.  This is a delightful, not-to-miss show for all the ages!

30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ORGAN CONCERT JOHN W GEARHART, III

Sunday, April 25, 2009 - 3 PM

Son of this church, John Gearhart, dedicated our new Austin organ in 1980. He returns to help us celebrate 30 years of inspiring organ music here at First church. He grew up in Hampton, graduated from William and Mary, and received his Masters Degree in Organ performance and Choral conducting from Temple University. He has served as organist here, in Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Mobile, Alabama, and Texas, where he and his wife Laurie live now. In honor of Hampton's 400th birthday he will sample music from the great composers of the last 400 years.

THE HILTON BRASS Celebrates Hampton's 400th

Sunday, July 11, 2010 - 3 PM

July 9 thru' 11, 2010 will be Hampton's official 400th birthday celebration weekend, and what better way for us to participate than to bring back our favorite brass quintet, the Hilton Brass.  They will put us in a joyful mood playing the patriotic march music of John Philip Sousa and others together with happy Dixieland favorites.

All events in the First Presbyterian Church’s Memorial Concert Series are held in the church’s colonial style sanctuary, which has excellent acoustics for musical performances. In 1999, when the Hampton Arts Commission was renovating the American Theatre for their current excellent offerings, they chose our sanctuary to present most of their diverse and exciting programs. This has encouraged us to offer the expanded musical program that you see above. Our location is in Hampton at the corner of Armistead and Victoria, next to the main Hampton library, with good parking and easy access to our sanctuary.

First Presbyterian Church and our Memorial Concert Series committee express sincere thanks to the E.K. Sloane Piano Fund of THE NORFOLK FOUNDATION for their recent donation which has made possible the purchase of the fine Baldwin grand piano used in these concerts and in worship.

Good music does not happen by chance. It exists in our community because music lovers step forward and help make it happen. Please join us in helping this happen. It will make a difference in the quality of life in Tidewater.
